Google+ Hits 10 Million Users: Is it Time for Facebook to Freak Out?

Google Watch's Clint Boulton sees the numbers as an indicator that Google+ could be the most popular social network ever: "My guess is, unless Google+ begins to drag from user fatigue and early adopters start flaming it, Google+ could be the most viral social service the world has seen. More viral than, yes, Facebook." As CNET's Stephen Shenkland points out, "Allen's statistics, though estimates, do provide evidence that there's demand for another sizable social network--and that Google isn't necessarily forever doomed to fail in trying to launch it."

Mashable was not alone. In the authoritative Business Insider in 2010, US tech commentators declared Buzz “brilliant”, “ground-breaking” and a “game-changer”, comparing it to Facebook. US tech commentator Jason Calacanis, part of the Silicon Valley-TechCrunch jetset, declared Facebook “toast” and that it had just “lost half its value

Allen also thinks that Google+ could even reach 20 million users by this weekend, based on current growth acceleration. He estimates that Google+ had around 1.7 million users on July 4 and 7.3 million on Sunday — that would mean a 350 percent growth in just 6 days

If it succeeds, Plus represents Google's best shot yet at muscling into a market that has threatened to topple the Internet search and advertising leader, as Facebook leads the way in making the online world social.
